 What
is audio mastering? Simply put, it is the final
creative step before replication. It is
what gives a commercially released CD that "sheen".
But more than that, audio mastering is
the opportunity to have someone with an experienced set
of ears make sure your music will sound its best and translate
well whether it is played in a car, on a home stereo, or
on a boombox. It is our goal to give your music that "radio-ready"
sound.
In addition, audio
mastering is the art of giving your record a cohesive
sound. It is making sure the pauses between the tracks are
the correct lengths. It is making sure any fadeouts are
nice and smooth. It is making sure the relative volumes
from one track to the next are the same. But most importantly,
it is making sure that your music is sonically taken to
the next level.
Before sending
your music for mastering there are a few rules of thumb
regarding your 2-track mixes:
- Make sure your peaks are hitting no
higher than -2db (to -4db) below 0dB. Don't worry about
your music not being loud enough. The volume will be brought
up to full swing in the mastering process.
- Try to avoid using any compression
on the final two track stereo mixes you send us for mastering.
You can't undo compression and distortion. If there is
too much compression on your pre-mastered final mix then
there is very little the mastering engineer can do to
reverse it.
- Finally, keep your mixes at the highest
resolution possible. In other words if you recorded your
session at 24-bit, 96 kHz then try to keep your mix at
24-bit, 96kHz.

Choosing a mastering facility can
be a confusing and difficult decision and we at Vision Sound
are very sensitive to that. We offer "FREE
MASTERING SAMPLES" of your audio
so you know when you listen to our work, you feel you've
made the right choice.
Getting a free master sample is quick and easy, simply follow
these instructions to send us your audio file over the internet.
We use a FREE program called SKYPE to chat and file share
online with our clients. Simply go to www.skype.com
and do the free software download. After you have installed
the program connect with us by entering the studio managers
user name and that is visionsound.
Ask to connect with us and then introduce yourself, from
there we will advise on how to get your audio to us through
SKYPE simply and easily. We will master the audio in a timely
fashion and SKYPE you back a one minute snippet (or so)
of what your newly "mastered" audio now sounds
like for your review.
